Dr. Woan-Shiuan Chien

Postdoctoral Researcher

National Tsing Hua University

My research interest primarily revolves around affective computing, machine learning and multimodal (speech, physiology) signal processing. Recently, I have broadened my research scope to address critical aspects of trustworthy AI, focusing on privacy, fairness, and bias within emotion recognition technologies. I am particularly interested in how these ethical considerations can be integrated into existing and new technologies to foster responsible AI development.
Additionally, I investigate the potential of various modalities, such as audio and physiological signals, in understanding and predicting human behaviors. I also develop novel machine learning and deep learning models with applications in various domains, including emotion recognition, group interaction and healthcare. Specifically, it includes:

- Emotion recognition: Investigating perceptual fairness by identifying and mitigating group and individual biases in emotion recognition systems. This involves developing algorithms that ensure equitable treatment of diverse user groups, thereby enhancing the reliability and credibility of affective computing applications.

- Trustworthy AI: Exploring mechanisms to incorporate ethical guidelines into machine learning models. This includes creating transparent systems that users can trust and verifying the impartiality of algorithms across different demographics and contexts.
